08 15 2006:

this morning, we released hawaiirama into the wild.

the site, our first for author alex salkever, is a comprehensive guide to hawaii for locals and visitors, written from the standpoint of a resident. alex, best known for his columns on apple for businessweek magazine and profiles for travel and leisure magazine, lives with his wife and kids on honolulu.

the site itself is custom from the ground up, and reflects the colors and spirit of the islands. custom typography is based on native forms, everything’s splashed in colors from the islands. each island is designated by its flower, something natives will recognize easily.

explore and enjoy. alex will be updating frequently, and is happy to answer any questions about the islands.

brand new feature over at we are scientists’ place today; you can now stream their entire album from a media player we just designed and installed for them. check the link at the top of the homepage. also some great news from king william: paris hilton was spotted and snapped in one of their dresses from the fall 2006 collection.

quick new project over at dropcards for we are scientists, whose identity and site we designed last year. band managers, dropcards is a nifty service that hooks up your audiences with your material, right as they leave your gigs. details at dropcards’ site.

this past monday saw a new launch for PBS, a weblog by andy carvin entitled learning.now. andy’s going to be writing about technology’s impact on education. some beautiful custom typography from milan based on forms from penmanship primers, and a logo from me suggesting both a thought balloon and a footpath.

we redesigned fleshbot (link contains adult material) for gawker media last week. fleshbot was the first gawker media site we created for nick in 2003, courtesy of an introduction from good friend jonno. it’s been a hectic, pleasant ride designing gawker’s properties since then.

so we’ve gotten some feedback that the last entry was a little oblique. apologies. the long and short of it was that our friends georgia and joe have officially opened their kennel. we’ve done a single page for them with some very nice typography to celebrate their first litter of german shepherd pups. there are six—four boys and two girls—if anyone’s in the mood for adoption.

we released a redesigned defamer for gawker media on monday, just in time to pick up traffic from oscar results searches. i like watching gawker sites progress as the years go on; the weblog format is definitely changing. what used to be a solid wall of book-like paragraphs with tiny text is changing into an open reading space with large, easy-to-comprehend typography and images. much more magazine-like.

02 21 2006: we’d like to welcome a new client to the family: king william clothing. they design swingy little silk wearables from austin, texas. we’ve just begun redesigning their site with the fall 2006 collection—other sections will follow. compare our work with the older collection’s page. a little attention to beauty goes a long, long way.—pk
